Hi, I’m Dr. Macie Kerbs—an Assistant Professor of Literacy who believes teaching should spark joy. I focus on early literacy and writing, helping future teachers (and current ones!) feel confident, creative, and empowered in their work. Whether I’m teaching preservice teachers in the classroom or coaching educators in schools, my passion is celebrating teacher voices and building joyful, equitable literacy practices that open doors for every child.
Because literacy learning is complex, I believe that children deserve individualized learning experiences that are authentic, meaningful, and relevant. Likewise, teachers deserve professional learning experiences embedded in their daily practice, build on their strengths, and focus on their professional decision-making as educators. Literacy teaching and learning should be grounded in current research from both literacy research scholars and practitioners. I see myself as this middle ground, striving to connect theory to practice inside local classrooms.
Outside of work, you’ll often find me with a book in hand, at a Broadway show, or enjoying live music. Music and reading both fuel my creativity and joy, reminding me of the importance of passion, storytelling, and connection in all aspects of life.
